Gibson Les Paul Triumph Bass 1973 - very rare FRETLESS!
Vintage Gibson Les Paul Triumph Bass, either 1973 or 1974, as it has the 3-point bridge. What sets this instrument apart from any other is the fact that it has a fretless ebony fingerboard! Vibrato sounds amazing with the short scale. I cannot verify that it was a special-order factory fretless, but a Gibson employee told me at the NAMM show in the late 80's that there were 2 or 3 of them made. The tone is stunning, there is no question that you can hear the wood, and the ebony helps bring a bell-like clarity to an instrument that some feel has a murky tonal reputation. It appears to have been re-finished at some point, as there are some barely noticeable holes filled in where the bridge cover would have been mounted, and another hole filled in where the pickguard has been re-shaped. There are dot inlays on the side of the fingerboard marking both where the frets would be, as well as the standard markers. There are some tiny nicks and dings, but nothing serious, and the finish has held up well. There were roundwound strings on this bass at some point, but the damage to the fingerboard is minimal to none. I have attempted to take a photo which shows the slight string wear, but am unsure if it is visible. The photos in the case were taken Sept 2015, the photos not in the case are from 2007.Honduras mahogany body with bindingLaminated mahogany set neck, with ebony fretless fingerboardSide dots marking all fret positions, plus the usual dot markersNatural mahogany finish30 1/2 inch scale (actually three eighths of an inch) 24 fretsTwo low impedance humbucking pickupsHi or Low impedance modesBody size length: 17 1/4" width: 12 3/4" depth 2"Width at nut 1 1/2"Weight: 10 lbs, 15 oz.Case: Non-logo vintage Gibson case, period correctI love this rare bird, and am not going to let it go for less than I feel it is worth.
